Eddie Day won BIG!

I watched election coverage all Tuesday night and into Wednesday. I have watched and listened to pundit after pundit analyze and over analyze the results. I heard all the exit polls indicate why the republicans lost their elections.

My personal belief is that one thing and one thing only lost the Rs the House and Senate and that is ARROGANCE. President Bush and all his R followers believed that they were right and that nothing anyone could say would change there minds. It took a thumping by the Ds to push Bush into firing Rummy.

I was thrilled and scared at the same time by the results. I was thrilled that America spoke up and told Bush and his Rs that we don't believe them anymore. I was scared and still am that the Ds don't do the same thing and screw up the chance for a D president in 2008.

Disagreement, debate and compromise are what the Framers intended. The history of the Framers and most of the leaders of our country disagreed, debated and compromised and came up with our "CONSTITUTION". Winston Churchill once said that "democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried."

Government works best when all work together towards a common goal. We don't all have to agree on how to get there, but if we work together we can more efficiently get to where we want to go.

So, to all new and old elected officials, the people have spoken. Let's all work together and more forward together.

Election Predictions!

My predictions for Tuesday:

Rendell.........Big

Casey............Big

Carney..........10%

Katsock.........5%

Yes, that's right! I believe that Reilly will have trouble retaining his Clerk of Courts seat. He spent a lot of his war chest on the state rep race and doesn't have it for a race as Clerk. Does anyone have any actual information on this comments? They are copied below.

Comment 1:
"Next council meeting ask council and the mayor how they purchased $60,000.00 worth of vehicles from a subsidary of a landfill owner from lackawanna county without bidding the contract. "

Comment 2:
"Oh yea, I forgot! There may also be a local contractor repairing catch basins in W-B for the entire term of the present administration. I hope they were bid. I beieve that piece mealing a project to avoid bidding requirements is a violation of state law. Oh! I am sorry, I forgot that Mayor Realtor has the same policy as Pres. G.W., if you don't agree with him you are anti-W-B or anti-american. It would also be a shame if a top administrator appointed by Mayor Realtor was a former employee of this company. This is a free country and they have every right to make the purchase, but don't tell the taxpayers that it is good for the economy of the City.

Why didn't the T.L. reporter speak to a financial person from the City, County or school district. A total of $158,000.00 a year will be lost to those entities, according to the reporter. What will that cost in teachers/school supplies and city and county services.

The T.L. reporter decided to talk to the W-B Chamber lackey, Larry Newman. It is obvious that the Chamber is running the City but at least talk to a government official. Newman said that the loss of $138,000 tax dollars every year, forever, pales in comparsion to the potential impact of having 405 students living in downtown W-B's growing business district.

There are already 100 students living in the building so at best there will 300 new students in the building. Students who will be moving three blocks from where they now live.

The lost to W-B school district is $84,000.00. The new students will not be paying property taxes. Maybe they will be working paying a wage tax. I believe W-B school distict receives .5% of the wage tax. The 405 students would have to earn $41,000.00 each in taxable salary to make up that loss.

The City will lose $47,000.00. That could be a police officer or a fire fighter. That amount over 10 years could pay for a new firehouse in the Heights.

It is time that the Chamber does what it is supposed to do, help the largest city in the county grow it's tax base, not help give away free tax break properties to its friends and cronies. Also stop sending the real businesses to the strip malls and industrial parks outside the City, some of which are owned by the Chamber.

Council tries to save their own butts!

The redistricting battle has been going on for nearly 5 years and it is not over. The brain trust of city council are at it again trying to undermine the will of the voters. Council believes that the voters of Wilkes-Barre are a bunch of morons, who did not know what they were voting for in 2001.

Shame on all of the members of Council who believe that! People in the City want to know, see and be able to contact their councilperson all the time, not just during election years when councilpersons suddenly get humble and actually talk to voters, maybe even knock on their doors to ask for votes.

Anyone who knows the Wilkes-Barre political landscape knows that that woman from North End who started the new anti-district petition drive is the wife of a retired city employee and they are close friends with a female councilperson from the Heights and her husband, who may also be in politics.

Councilmembers presently have no incentive to help anyone because it is easy to spread the blame for inaction to other members or the administration, they have been doing that for 12 years or more. Example: There are currently 3, that's right 3!! members of council from the Parsons/Miners Mills area and none have done anything about the deplorable condition of George Ave. George Ave has more operating retail businesses than the entire downtown. Maybe if one councilperson had to depend on the votes of the citizens who live near and use George Ave the road may have been paved sooner. The last time George Ave was paved was the late 1970s. This is mainstreet Wilkes-Barre where taxpayers live and work. It has no representation from the present council who are more concerned with keeping the downtown buildings and businesses operating, all of which. owned by rich back mountain people who pay little or no taxes to the City thanks to KOZ and other free tax programs.

I attended a City Hall for Day in Parsons back in 2002 and was told that George Ave was in the OCD budget. Why is it taking so long to pave one of the main business districts actually in Wilkes-Barre. Is it because the present Mayor lost Parsons in his mayorial election? Is it because the money was move to the downtown projects? Oh, it is scheduled to be paved sometime this year, just in time for next years election. Parsons was punished for 3 years because of the last election and now it is finally getting something (long overdue) because re-election is near. VOTERS OF PARSONS, DON'T BE FOOLED!

Council districts will better serve the taxpayers as taxpayers will know their councilperson and be more open to contacting them. Also, if qualified people are elected, they will be able to serve the needs of their district and also the needs of the City as a whole.
