Council tries to save their own butts!
The redistricting battle has been going on for nearly 5 years and it is not over. The brain trust of city council are at it again trying to undermine the will of the voters. Council believes that the voters of Wilkes-Barre are a bunch of morons, who did not know what they were voting for in 2001.
Shame on all of the members of Council who believe that! People in the City want to know, see and be able to contact their councilperson all the time, not just during election years when councilpersons suddenly get humble and actually talk to voters, maybe even knock on their doors to ask for votes.
Anyone who knows the Wilkes-Barre political landscape knows that that woman from North End who started the new anti-district petition drive is the wife of a retired city employee and they are close friends with a female councilperson from the Heights and her husband, who may also be in politics.
Councilmembers presently have no incentive to help anyone because it is easy to spread the blame for inaction to other members or the administration, they have been doing that for 12 years or more. Example: There are currently 3, that's right 3!! members of council from the Parsons/Miners Mills area and none have done anything about the deplorable condition of George Ave. George Ave has more operating retail businesses than the entire downtown. Maybe if one councilperson had to depend on the votes of the citizens who live near and use George Ave the road may have been paved sooner. The last time George Ave was paved was the late 1970s. This is mainstreet Wilkes-Barre where taxpayers live and work. It has no representation from the present council who are more concerned with keeping the downtown buildings and businesses operating, all of which. owned by rich back mountain people who pay little or no taxes to the City thanks to KOZ and other free tax programs.
I attended a City Hall for Day in Parsons back in 2002 and was told that George Ave was in the OCD budget. Why is it taking so long to pave one of the main business districts actually in Wilkes-Barre. Is it because the present Mayor lost Parsons in his mayorial election? Is it because the money was move to the downtown projects? Oh, it is scheduled to be paved sometime this year, just in time for next years election. Parsons was punished for 3 years because of the last election and now it is finally getting something (long overdue) because re-election is near. VOTERS OF PARSONS, DON'T BE FOOLED!
Council districts will better serve the taxpayers as taxpayers will know their councilperson and be more open to contacting them. Also, if qualified people are elected, they will be able to serve the needs of their district and also the needs of the City as a whole.

Also, the person that is passing around the petition was also on the mayor's campaign committee. I say get rid of all seven of them when it comes time to vote. They are so afraid of losing their cushy seats and benefits. Its about time we give council a refreshing change.
Disgusted about what is going on in the W-B Fire.Dept. seems a certain person can do just about anything he wants,i guess doing jobs and helping out with the Chief and Mayor seems to let him get away with a lot. Cmon guys speak up and don't let this person get away with it!!!!!!!
oh????Due tell more!!!
Politics and Wilkes-Barre City go hand in hand. What gets me is city workers do what they are expected to do but then you have some that just do whatever they want and get away with it. When someone tries to speak up and let things out that shoule be known it falls on deaf ears! Why? one word POLITICS
To the person posting anonymously about a city worker doing what he/she wants. This person's so called co workers are getting blamed for this on another local blogger's site. I highly doubt that this is a co-worker of this person and it is not fair for anyone to get the blame except for the sneaky person that is doing this. The other blogger should really look into this before putting blame onto co-workers and questioning their work ethics because I am sure if he thought hard enough he would know who it was!
This City Council and Mayor need to go...They are selfish and self centered and are always thinking about themselves and their own political future....I am appalled and amazed that they got re elected
I am so glad that I stepped in to protect the taxpayers...I know these people on City Council are in it for their own political agenda's///look at Bill Barrett...he and his wife make 150,000.00 on the taxpayers...isnt that enough ? I guess not ...these people are always sucking on the tit of the taxpayers and its time for it to stop....
Thanks for the encouragement to get a new look to the Wilkes Barre City Council....I would appreciate any support that is given to me in my quest to help the taxpayers of the City to remove these people that are overpaid and over benefitted...I will remove the health care benefit if I am elected...I will also make the City Elected Officials that get the Health Care benefit, pay a co pay like all other City Workers have to pay. I also wont be collecting a Pension like Bill Barrett collects $50,000.00 a year from the Police Dept plus the salary his wife collects of $45,000.00 makes the Barrett household a City Taxpayer dead weight that must be removed....
Attend the City Council meeting on Thursday, the admin. wants public input on the memorial in Kirby Park, Council is "irked" because some citizens are opposing it, the real truth is no one is against a memorial, just the outrageous price tag on it. Go to the meeting and see how much they take the public's opinion, they will talk in circles, just like every meeting and end up doing what they want anyway. Please remember this on election day, lets get a refreshing change in city government.
I will be at the meeting tonight fighting for the taxpayers as usual...I am appauled at lack of respect that the Taxpayer recieve from this administration...We need to show them in May that the taxpayers are the Boss and not them...
Does W-B Online need a brick sh*t house to fall on him to realize that no one is againist a 9/11 Memorial just the ridiculous price tag it has? Also, the people from the Heights have every right to complain, since thay asked if they received enough donations and labor for free to reopen the firehouse and that was answered with a NO! It doesn't make any sense no matter how you sugar coat it. People are not as stupid as you portray them to be, we have our own minds and opinions just like you do. Get over yourself, we are not all cheerleaders like some people.
The Heights Firehouse is a serious issue that the current Administration refuses to address....I guess when there is a death and the City is sued for negligence, then maybe City Council will address the situation...instead we try to penalize Denise Carey and others that try to do the right thing to protect the taxpayers. I find it real strange that Councilperson Kathy Kane and Jim McCarthy were the ones that set Denise Carey up for the fight to get a fire house in the Heights and then when the Mayor and City Attorneys went to court and Denise got a legal bill of $11,000.00 they were nowhere to be found in her defense...Sounds like the type of people I trust and want to sit on City Council ! I think not....elect Walter Griffith Jr for City Council for a real voice for the taxpayers...not a bunch of "rubber stamps" for a Mayor that lines his own pockets with political campaign money.
i recenlty found this blog and i must say there are some interesting facts listed. what i was wondering is there any truth about a city employee who received permission to live out of the city until he is granted a divorce? his job he holds states he must be a resident of the city but yet he doesn't reside in the city? i wonder if he or she has there license updated or is driving with an invalid one?
Walter? I wonder who that is? He seems to have in for Bill Barrett. Surprisingly always talking about the same thing - pension money? Walter - do you not think an officer who serves the city for 20+ years deserves a pension or furthermore, do you believe a woman who also independently served the city for 20+ years doesn't deserve a pension. That's kind of sexist. I'm glad the city voters didn't vote you in... again (What has it been like 4 or 5 times?). If none of you can see progress, you're blind.
